Last week, 65-year-old Cary Woodland pleaded no contest to two counts of failure to file an income tax return — third degree felonies.

Woodland, a man from Ogden, was investigated by the Utah State Tax Commission Criminal Investigation Unit. Investigators contacted Woodland and provided him several opportunities to file missing returns but he refused claiming that he has not agreed to be taxed by the state of Utah. The case was prosecuted by the Utah Attorney General’s office and Woodland was convicted in the 3rd District Court of two felony counts of failure to file a proper tax return.

Woodland was ordered to pay $75,027 in back taxes, penalties, and interest for tax years 2019 and earlier and placed on three years of probation. He was also ordered as a condition of his probation, to file returns for 2020 and 2021 within 120 days of sentencing and comply with all Utah tax filing requirements in future years.
