South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) agents today arrested a Richland County woman and charged her with seven counts of tax evasion.
Zina F. Hampton, 59, of Irmo, failed to timely report Individual Income Tax returns for tax years 2015-2021, according to her arrest warrants. During that time, the warrants allege she had total state taxable income of $657,843, but because she filed false W-4 forms, the amount of tax withheld from multiple employers was minimal. Hampton owes state tax totaling $30,283.
If convicted, Hampton faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and/or a fine of up to $10,000 per count, plus the cost of prosecution. She is being held in the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center pending a bond hearing.
The SCDOR is committed to the fair administration of tax laws. By taking enforcement action against noncompliant taxpayers, the Department seeks to prevent unfairly increasing the tax burden on those who do comply.
